Some years ago I was closely concerned by another area where freedom should be absolutely maintained and increased. I am convinced that amongst other biological domains agriculture and horticulture should be inspirated by what emerge in free software.
Because protecting new plant varieties is way too expensive for amators or small companies, here was my first attempt (sorry, this is in French) to define a free or very cheap process to register them : http://www.amoons.be/botarosa/botarosa/roses/enreg.htm (All these articles are from www.botarosa.com) I must say that I wasn't informed about free software at this time and thus of course this process could be improved by adapting different licenses inspired by free software ones. I think the most interesting idea should be the creation of a Libre Public DNA Network (based perhaps on a collaboration between Universities and Botanical Gardens), which collects DNA from new plants varieties, stores it in deep freezers and registers the wishes and data from the hybridizers about their creations. Some other things I wrote on this subject (the las one is in English) : http://www.amoons.be/botarosa/botarosa/roses/conserv.htm http://www.amoons.be/botarosa/botarosa/roses/commer.htm http://www.amoons.be/botarosa/botarosa/roses/recomeng.htm ivan ________________________________ De : Jan Claeys <[email protected]> À : create <[email protected]> Envoyé le : Lun 7 juin 2010, 23h 36min 29s Objet : [CREATE] LGM is about libre software & libre graphics; what about libre hardware? When I was at LGM, (almost?) all talks concentrated on free or open source software, using it, and/or the creation of free/libre graphics, fonts, movies, etc. And there was a lot of stuff to discover there, both from well-known and from new projects. And of course the diversity of software developers vs. users was great... But what about the hardware parts? There are some people working on actual "libre graphics hardware" too! I list a couple of hardware(-related) projects below, but I'm sure they aren't the only ones, and it might be great to invite some of these projects to future LGMs? http://www.elphel.com/ A company providing camera hardware based on "off-the-shelf" hardware components connected by open source wiring diagrams & FPGA programs. http://cinema.elphel.com/ A community project to create an "open source" digital movie camera good enough to create cinema quality movies. http://chdk.wikia.com/ Open source firmwares for "Canon PowerShot" photo cameras that give you more control over your camera than the official firmwares. Does anybody know about other similar interesting hardware(-related) projects? -- Jan Claeys _______________________________________________ CREATE mailing list [email protected] http://lists.freedesktop.org/mailman/listinfo/create
