Well, now that you mention points, maybe there's an extra reason I didn't consider that makes a case for a 72 dpi default: Postscript typographic points are 1/72th of an inch. Or 72 dpi. 72 dpi is legacy as a screen resolution, but maybe the reason for keeping it as a fallback has something to do with typographic points. Maybe because we're used to se a 12 pt type as 12 px on screens?
