The Alexandria Digital Library Project has published its list of
geographic names from the ADL Gazetteer and made the file available for
download from our Gazetteer Development website at
www.alexandria.ucsb.edu/gazetteer . The list contains 5.9 million
geographic names (i.e., placenames), both primary and variant names for
worldwide locations. The information for each name includes the ADL
Gazetteer ID which can be used with the ADL Gazetteer Service Protocol
to retrieve the full record for the location from the ADL Gazetteer. A
link to the Protocol can also be found on the ADL Gazetteer Development
page. A set of sample queries have been provided ("Hands-on
Introduction") to illustrate the use of the Protocol, including a query
using the Identifier. This list is provided with the expectation that it
will be useful for geoparsing projects where natural language processing
seeks to identify placenames in text. It is provided for use according
to the copyright statement that accompanies the list, which is as follows:
