Dear All,

I have the pleasure to announce that
DAI and CoDArchLab would like to become members of CRM-SIG.

PLEASE VOTE by Monday, August 16.

Best,

martin

Arachne is the central object-database
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Database> of the German Archaeological
Institute <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Archaeological_Institute>
(DAI). In 2004 the DAI and the Cologne Digital Archaeology Laboratory
(CoDArchLab) at the University of Cologne
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Cologne> (FA) joined the
effort to support Arachne as a tool for free internet-based research.

This is why the CoDArchLab as well as the DAI, as cooperation partners
for the development of Arachne and other archaeological software, do
separately apply to become members of the CIDOC-CRM Special Interest
Group. The DAI will do this in a separate step, based on the fact that
the CIDOC-CRM is the DAIs officially supported
metadata-exchange-standard, as it has been established by a decree of
the conference of directors. The CoDarchLab is applying by this message.

The CoDArchLab is part of the Archaeological Institute of Cologne
University and is working in closest cooperation with the Cologne chair
for Humanities Computing (Manfred Thaller) as well as with the Computing
Center at the University of Cologne (Ulrich Lang). Its main focuses are
digital representations of archaeological objects and problems as well
as mass-digitalisation of archaeological data, mainly, but not
exclusively, from the photographic and research archives of DAI as well
as from present excavations of DAI; which, all in all, might constitute
the the largest body of documentary material in the archaeological
world. This cooperation is based on a contract between DAI and Cologne
University and is supported by both institutions. Furthermore, the
philosphical faculty of Cologne University has funded an
Archaeo-Informatic-Pool of 30 clients, one Server and a host of
specialized software inside of the rooms of the CoDArchLab to support
the archaeoinformatic work performed by the institutions quoted above.

Reinhard Foertsch (http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reinhard_Förtsch;
http://www.klassarchaeologie.uni-koeln.de/?q=node/86) is a professor in
Classical Archaeology and the head of the CoDArchLab. He specialized in
digital representations of archaeological concepts and their
consequences on Classical Archaeology.
