We would like to invite your EAA2018 paper proposals for:

Session 555: Using the CIDOC CRM for archaeologists: from theory to practice

[Theme: Theories and methods in archaeological sciences}

This session aims to given an open look on how the CIDOC CRM standard and its
extensions can be adopted by archaeologists in order to support and further
their research through data integration. The emphasis of the session is on how
the standard has been and is being adopted in actual archaeological research
and data management in order to support and improve research processes. With a
practical emphasis on theory-in-practice, the session aims to show successes
and also challenges in adopting the CIDOC CRM method for expressing
archaeological data.

The session will, thus, include 5 to 6 short papers presenting case studies (20
min. and discussions) exploring the above topics. Additionally, there will be a
presentation of a generic workflow for implementing CIDOC CRM on archaeological
datasets, giving a synopsis of steps and tools required to achieve a practical
result. This workflow will be presented in relation to a case study and the
material presented will be available to session participants for self-study.

With the above agenda, the goal of this work will be to open CIDOC CRM to more
researchers in the archaeological domain and to open discussions about the
practical interests, barriers and concerns that this method presents.

If you are interested in submitting a paper presenting your CRM implementation,
interested in learning about a CRM implementation workflow, and/or interested
in the general discussion of the potential benefits and difficulties of using
CRM to integrate archaeological data, please send us a message
([email protected] and [email protected]). The deadline for
submitting abstracts through the EAA website is 15 February.

We look forward to your participation in this session and this important
discussion.
