there's an interesting issue.
In insert_ob_in_map objects will preferable be inserted *below* other items 
blocking view.
For some reason, the amulet in the bug report has blockview set. Consequently 
the player (and other monsters probably) will be *above* the amulet in the 
stack list. Pickup mode only considers items below the player, thus amulet is 
never auto-picked up.

I'm wondering the reason of the blockview behaviour. Is there a compelling 
reason for that?

If yes, probably autopickup should check all items, including those above the 
player ;)
