I haven't had the opportunity to read the link (or the posts in
entirety for that matter). Here's my quick and abridged, personal and
non-researched answer. You may recognize this as similar in tone to
another argument I often refer to, but I believe that appropriate
attire varies according to who is wearing it and is largely cultural.
I personally don't feel a hat is very respectful in God's house. I
don't wear one to worship, but may have to more social affairs, so I
obviously have some wiggle room there. I also don't wear a hat when
saying the pledge of allegiance or during the national anthem. For
me, to wear a hat to Sunday worship would be saying, only for myself,
"I think this is disrespectful to God, but I'm doing it anyway." If I
did not feel that wearing the hat was disrespectful in the first
place, then I wouldn't be showing conscious disrespect by wearing
one. I can't judge anyone else for their attire, because I don't know
there thoughts on that attire. (and I try to steer clear of judging in
the first place)
If God or a spiritual authority put me in a position in which wearing
a hat might foster good will within the community that I am trying to
reach, I think that I would take that as a waiver to wear the hat, but
still would not wear one when visiting other churches unless I was
still acting in that capacity.
Speaking of Jim specifically, or anyone else in such a position, I
find that, as a teacher, one can diffuse acts or symbols of defiance
or rebellion (however small) by embracing / engaging in them. If I
bring my skateboard/ipod to class, it may not prevent students from
doing the same but it does diffuse the skateboard/ipod as a symbol of
anarchy within the setting.
BTW, I will also wear a do-rag in church after I have been out skating
because, quite frankly, the unsightly state of my hair at that point,
having been re-molded by sweat and a skate helmet, is probably more of
a distraction and more disrespectful than the do-rag itself.
