I forgot to mention. If this feature is needed only by a single
application, it can be implemented as a custom extension just for that
particular app. It doesn't necessarily needs to land on the t-e-c
repository.
Later, if there is enough demand from other applications, migration to
t-e-c should be straightforward.
I would recommend this approach from now on, because every new API is
always a maintenance burden.
