I don't know the current state of hydrogen (we focus on roxy, which

It might be expected to not be able to ssh to the discovered node. I
know it works on SUSE, but maybe not on Ubuntu. (What matters is that
you can ssh to an allocated node, which is not the state of your node
yet).

What's the state of the node in the UI? Or is it not visible at all?
Maybe look at the crowbar logs...
