I've had a fair amount of experience with both the air and water cooled VW's (since
1984).

It's been a while since I kept up with the GTi offerings from VW but I didn't thinkg
that VW offered a Turbo version of the VR6. At least not as a stock offering. They
did, however, for the smaller 4 cylinder 1.8 liter (which is what we had in our 1999
VW Passat; re-chip the OBC and you have a ton-o-fun!). I could be wrong, though.

One reason I would be surprised if it did have a Turbo would be for the lack of space
under the hood. The VR6 power plant is a pretty large beast. Take the VW Corrado
SLC. If you want to replace say the lower radiator hose you pretty much have to
pull/lift the engine in order to do so. Because of the tight quarters, engine temp
has been an issue meaning that they've been known to run hotter than other VW engines.

Getting back to the VW GTi in question... If the Turbo was from the dealer (it should
also have a small intercooler tucked away somewhere) then I would say that the price
is indeed worth it. Again, assuming it's the stock Turbo kit offered from VW, for an
additional $200-300 (USD), you should be able to re-chip the OBC and get the full
performance from it while keeping reliability.

If you want, email me off the list (since this isn't really the proper place to
discuss it) and we can talk a bit more about it. I would be interested to learn more
about the Turbo that's on this engine.
