A gasket scraper from your local auto parts store, a LOT of Scotch-Brite
pads, some carb/brake parts cleaner, and a lot of patience.

Spray some carb/choke cleaner in there and let it soak and soften it up...
wipe it out with a rag, and reapply a couple times... it'll clean up
nicely.

Nowhere...  I've never used anything on a headgasket.

Take it to a machine shop to make sure the head is flat and to get them to
clean it up.
