Your eninge is running a bit rich for some reason and you are getting a little unburned fuel into the exhaust system during over run or decell when the tranny is pulling the engine revs really more than the opened throttle is. That explains the pops and the sooty pipes. My '89 does it as well. So long as the computer isn't giving any codes saying there is a specific problems, I wouldn't worry about it. If you have a more free flowing exhaust, you are more likely to hear this noise than if it is a restrictive system. Only if it is really balsting or banging or getting codes should you be concerned. If you live in a state that requires emissions testing with a sniffer shoved in your pipes and the car is already borderline for passing the test, this is a symptom of part of the problem. Once I passed emissions, I stopped worrying about my noise.

My exhaust tips are also black on the inside. I don't think this is normal, If any one could suggest what is wrong and how I might fix it.
