Fred,

Sounds like the A/C pulley clutch has frozen, this is probably what is wrong
with my car currently and also to my old Omni GLH Turbo. There is also a
set of electromagnets that are what engage the compressor shaft to the
spinning pulley (this and the clutch may be all part of the same system on
the Honda as I don't have mine apart). Your pulley has locked in the
engaged position if it is trying to spin the compressor shaft. Also
possible that the compressor shaft has locked internally so the belt slides
and screeches on the stopped pulley. Mine locked in the off position so it
is only when the I try to turn the A/C on that is screeches so bad.

My fix will be to replace the entire compressor and pulley from another car
I had. Bad thing is that you have to crack the system and lose and recharge
the refrigerant. When at the dealer a week ago, they said there was a
clutch replacement kit that didn't require cracking the system but if your
problem is a locked compressor or magnets, you may not be changng the right
parts. Also there is darned little room between the pulley and the frame
rail so an in-position replacement will be very tight. Not conducive to my
big hands.

My first fix was a sharp knife to cut the belt, inactive the system and
remove the screeching. No A/C for now butno screeching either.
