"12 inch will fit but there won't be enough air-space for it. "

See, I have a problem with this statement. It's too general. There are some great small box subs out there, 12" included. I'm sure you can fit a 12" in a sealed enclosure in the well just fine...actually, I had my Image Dynamics IDQ12 in there a few years back.

Fred...who's very picky about audio stuff. =)

For an even more general reply ...  :^)

A typical 10 inch sub-woofer requires about 0.50 to 0.90 cu.ft. ~ that's 14.0 to 25.5 liters? ~ for a sealed box.  About the size of the spare tire well in a 1990-91 CRX.  A ported box would require 0/90 to 1.50 cu.ft..

A typical 12 inch sub-woofer requires 1.00 to 1.75 cu.ft. ~ that's 28.3 to 49.5 liters... ~ for a sealed box and 1.75 to 2.75 cu.ft for a ported box.

If space is at a minimum, you can use things like a passive radiator (which I have used in the past).  Isobaric type boxes (I've only built one in my life with a pair of 8s) also work in some small areas.

Then there's the free-air sub-woofers and speakers which at minimum requires nothing more than a flat piece of wood (i.e. plywood) to be mounted to.  I've only used the ones made by Pioneer and Pyle (back in the mid to late 80s) performance was pretty good considering...

FWIW, as Mark Humphrey recently learned (and some who already know me) that I did graduate with a Sound Engineering degree where I actually did use some of that college stuff in my really early boxes (I wished I had photographed them as I built some pretty elaborate ports and ducts).  I use to get really *scientific* with my audio stuff in that I would take how certain freqs would bounce off parts of the interior of a vehicle.  I even used (and I still own today) a spectrum analyzer to help tune and dial in the audio.  In the early 90s, I built a Bug in which I planned to take to various Sound Off competitions. I won a few local events and I the closest I got was at the Winter CES (Consumer Electronic Show) up in Vegas.   I made it into the quarter finals for the armature 1000 watt class.  I do have photos of that... I should scan them...

It was a lot of fun and I was young...  (* sigh *)

Now I'm old and (* ahem *) responsible...  ;^)

Ah.... the old days of a Sparkomatic and a pair of 5 inch speakers hanging in the door with a single screw!  :^P
