Problem could be in the gear box and that it needs to be adjusted.  The 
proper (and safe) way to do this will also require the aid of a spring 
gauge (I believe you can rent these).  If the gear box   adjustment is 
within spec (1.5kg, 3.3 lbs. 15N) then the problem could be in the steering 
rack or one of the other suspension components such as a loose tie rod or a 
worn out bushing.  Does the car wander from left to right while 
driving?  And when was the last time the alignment was checked?
