My guess would be that it cracked in half between the round hot/cold selector and everything else. This seems to be the weak spot on the unit.
Mine broke because the bonehead thief wasn't smart enough to figure out that there's a screw holding the CD player into a metal plate in the back, so prying it out wasn't going to work.
