If I recall correctly, the '88s did not require the
clutch to be depressed to power the starter but the '89s do. I know the
'85 I worked on recently did not require it.

I am installing a "voice activated" ignition unit in my 89 Si. It is a
prototype , so it's in the testing phase at the moment.
My question: Can someone tell me what years of CRX were made with
the safety clutch? Mine has one, but I do not know which other years of CRX
have them.
