You will probably want to take the time to get it off without scraping the metal then.  That was the look I wanted when I did mine and didn't want to have to repaint the floor, wanted a nice a clean look.
I will have to try the heat gun method next time, I have a huge 1 HP industrial fan that moves lots of air for the possible toxic fumes.

Yeah, if removing its gonna be that hard, is there any kind of paint on stuff that will help smooth it out, maybe fiberglass resin, so that when i paint the interior it will look smooth and not rough like the rubber is.  Im stripping the interior, but still want it to look really nice, kind of a race car look but with a show quality shine.
