You will probably want to take the time to get it off without scraping the metal then.  That was the look I wanted when I did mine and didn't want to have to repaint the floor, wanted a nice a clean look. Yeah, if removing its gonna be that hard, is there any kind of paint on stuff that will help smooth it out, maybe fiberglass resin, so that when i paint the interior it will look smooth and not rough like the rubber is.  Im stripping the interior, but still want it to look really nice, kind of a race car look but with a show quality shine.
