The nice thing about the scanners is you can test the diagnostic functions of the ECU. 
 You can 'set' test faults and see if the ECU responds.  You can also monitor and 
watch what the ECU 'sees' from the sensors.  

It also helps to pinpoint the problem.  I have had several fault codes of '1', which 
is oxygen content.  Oxygen content faults could be caused by the O2 sensor as well as 
fuel pressure regulator or a bad ground.  The scanner could help pinpoint the problem 
without necessarily having to test each component individually.

The reason for asking is I am interested in a 'scanner kit' that could be used on 
several makes and models of.  Just wanted to see what, if anything, everyone was 
using.  Thanks.
