Ken -

So far it looks as if my problem was indeed a bad ground cable ... I have not seen the problem return with respect to the head unit shutting off and then coming back on at random.  But I don't want to jinx it either...  :^)  I did let my car sit over the weekend and then he fired right up this morning without any hesitation.  I had to be in early so I had the head lights on as well as the heater (not as cold as some areas but it was pretty nippy out for us).  No problem what-so-ever.

I'll keep you updated...

Hope you're having better luck!

Hey Robert,

Hey Ken...

So what about your stereo? Did it solve the random shutting off of the head unit?

Dunno yet...  Jiggy did start up this morning without any hesitation and on the way into work, the head unit did not shut off and then come back on like it was earlier.

It's still hard to say since there were a couple of times where it did not do this and other times it was doing it constantly.

I did notice, however, that my alternator was charging the battery a lot more and it wouldn't let it drop below +12 VDC so that's a good thing(?).

The reason I ask is because I have been driving stereo-less since Oct 2002 because my head unit kept shutting off as well. I sprayed contact cleaner behind the face plate and base unit but I haven't checked the wire harness at the back of the unit yet. I will do that tomorrow. When I wiggle the face plate a bit it comes on but then shuts back off.

I had a Pioneer many moons ago that did that.  And when I sent it in to have it serviced by Pioneer, they said it was the face plate itself - something with the ON/OFF button/circuit in the face plate.

In my case, I think it is the head unit being defective or maybe a loose connection to the head unit.  Last summer, I had already replaced my positive and negative battery cables, the grounds from the valve cover and the cable to the relay box.

I guess I hadn't put too much effort in trying to troubleshoot my head unit because I kinda wanted to get a new Alpine unit that plays MP3's.

LOL!  I was hoping that my head unit was bad too so that it would be an excuse to get a newer model.  :^)  Actually, I'm very happy with my head unit and if the problem returns and I determine that it's not related to a bad ground or battery, I'll probably see what the cost is to have it repaired versus replacing it with a new one.

If the problem returns, I'll let you know but for now, it looks to be gone.
