Actually, one of my college classes was to construct a custom made hybid alchohol hybrid electric SUV for the FututreTruck competition. Check it out at www.futuretruck.org, I was on the University of Maryland team.
The reason this has a sort of round about bearing on your question is that for the hybrid portion of the truck, we used a modified electric drivetrain from the Insight. It was a great program, if anyone out there sees this and would like more info, let me know. Coolest class ever, we basicly built an SUV from scratch. It got 25 mpg, SULEV emmisions, full A/C system, full creature comforts and all.
