In the cyber-world, 'privacy' doesn't exist. In the sophisticated world
of international computer terrorists, all boundaries are down. Hackers
can get through any security system, and the results can be disruptive
or disastrous. Hackers, a full-edition of the fifth estate, looks at the
prospects for a future dominated by computer terrorists, Wednesday,
December 8 at 8 p.m. on CBC Television.

Host Linden MacIntyre talks with many hackers and with those who've
tried to deal with their power in this inside documentary about the
world's latest battleground. Everyone interviewed agrees with one
chilling fact - there is absolutely no way to stop them. No technology
has been devised to make our systems hacker-proof. They can invade any
computer, slither through any barrier, they can delve into home
computers, and just as easily sort though bank records and company
secrets, and they could ultimately hit the systems that control our
power plants, emergency services, and the computer systems that land and
guide airplanes.

Although Montreal's "Mafia Boy" was only 15 when he knocked out the
massive e-Bay auction site, and "Comrade" only 16 when he broke into
NASA's computer system and downloaded a space station program valued at
$1.7 billion, experts say that generally the very young hackers are not
the ultimate menace. Most of them are simply teenage power-trippers
playing around. The ones to fear are people like former KGB and FBI
agents who have the knowledge and the agenda to do great damage, or like
the Japanese cult that had plans to bring about enormous cyber-assault.

Because this cautionary story has international implications, Hackers
moves from Toronto, Ottawa and Montreal to Amsterdam, Japan and
Washington D.C., where hackers are encountered and their exploits
detailed. The thrill of living in the computer era has an ominous side,
and in Hackers viewers will come face to face with what this could mean.

Following this telecast, cbc.ca will host a web chat
<http://interact.cbc.ca/cgi-bin/WebX?13@@.ee7923f> with Linden
MacIntyre, Neil Docherty and some guest hackers from around the globe.
