Canada's privacy commissioner George Radwanski (former aide to Prime
Minister Jean Chretien) recently gave a typical Canadian-bureaucrat speech
explaining why government legislation is better than technology to protect
your privacy. Given today's G&M article showing the Canadian government
snooping through people's mail and today's WSJ article that exposed the
FBI's never-ending quest for info on individuals, I'd conclude that
government is *not* the best resource to protect my privacy. Also,
Radwanski seems to think that more privacy laws will enhance freedom of
speech. He needs to think about this a little more. If I have greater
rights to control what people can say about me (which is what strong privacy
legislation does), then you have less rights to speak. These two social
goods are at odds, not commensurate.
