Would they protect your secrets if the laptop was stolen? Smart card
solutions would not add much protection, because the smart card might also
be stolen. Retinal or finger print scanners would possibly work, but AFAIK
such hardware is not commonly used to protect laptops from theft.

I'd like to stress, that you attacked the transfer format. No implementation
is required to use this format for storage.

OTOH thanx for you work. It allows to prevent a probable bellcore attack to

Not really. It's a problem of insufficient checks. PGP263(i)n and GPG
patches to do the necessary checks are out since thursday. There is still a
problem with DSA keys, due to braindead bit saving complex of NAI.

Note that in my follow-up commenting a post of John Savard,
I didn't mention any specific patents besides the rotation
patent of Hitachi. (I didn't even know the details of your
patents. I was more commenting on the general patenting
practice. The US patenting practice seems indeed to be
comparatively weird, as evidenced by a patent recently
discussed in the group that is based upon an idea of getting
a hole into the fifth dimention.) But Savard's post
seemed to indicate that employing feedback in general in
crypto would be violating some patents. I think that, if
true, would be definitely something done wrong by the
employers of the patent offices. For not only is the idea
of feedback very old and ubiquitous, feedback has also
actually been done and common in crypto since decades,
as far as I am aware.

I suppose we have misunderstanding. I mean we are comparing
block size with key size, aren't we? Suppose one fixes a
block size for some reason but the keysize is not restricted
(since one could design to fit), why should it be bad
to use a very large key, excepting computing cost and speed?

Well, I don't know if I should say this but to me hate is just an
extreme form of love. Really, I think this master of
alt.privacy.anon-server, alt.dad.rights.unmoderated and soc.men is
somewhat obsessed with me ;-) Sorry if it causes any grief :-( I believe
he has already lost a cable internet account over me, but this is just
speculation, and somehow he believes I am the one that caused this and
not his excessive sending of mail to anonymous remailers. Somehow it
also strikes me as funny that he is somehow a regular of
alt.dads-rights.unmoderated as this group has always had some friction
with alt.privacy.anon-server in the past. Fortunately his 'flood' as how
he calls it is easier to filter than the Ken Pangborn stuff that used to
plague the APAS news group. I guess I won't mind if someone starts
canceling these cross posts to sci.crypt, just make sure that this
doesn't inspire 'my pet' to update his Visual Basic script to adjust to
these cancels. I have already send Richard, the author of Quicksilver a
request to include some form of 'hash cash' in his remailer client. This
would, together with the trolls SMTP server, limit the amount of
traffic 'it' can generate. I myself, as a dailup user, can life with a
few thousand messages that are automatically moved to my trash folder
where I can 'inspect' the fan mail I get. Takes me at most 15 minutes to
download when my ISP is not overloaded. It could be much worse had this
troll not used anonymous remailers but free dialup accounts together
with open spam relays. Or several of them at the same time. They would
allow hundereds of thousands of messages each day to sci.crypt.
Fortunately the troll is at his max ATM.

Just keep the newsgroups alive ;-)
Thomas
