Thankyou for your help. I took rng.h / .cpp from the CVS and everything worked.
The randomness test on the first 5000 bytes of the 100,000 files created by cryptest.exe fips-rand gave a minimum Maurer test value of 0.987009, and a mean value of 0.998817 (I also processed all the files but didn't compute the stats)
So I guess that's "random enough" for most practical purposes...? --
