Definitely weird behavior... but not necessarily embarrassing. ;)

As an additional pair of data points, I did two gzip compressions on
my XP SP2 box, and both resulted in files which 7-Zip (my Windows
[un]archiver of choice) handled without problems.

Details:

7-Zip 4.45

Native Win32 gzip 1.2.4

Cygwin gzip 1.3.5
