I don't think the code you posted is the problem. I don't see anything
obviously wrong with it, and I pasted your function into a block,
added enough that it could compile on its own, built and ran.

No problems on my 10.5.4 system with g++ i686-apple-darwin9-g++-4.0.1
(GCC) 4.0.1 (Apple Inc. build 5484).

Could you generate an entire short program (with main() and all) that
reproduces the problem as simply as possible, and post it to the list?
