That's back to the Visual Studio 6.0 days...

Try opening the SLN file instead (solution file for newer versions of 
Visual Studio).

I then tell it to batch build all.  A storm of errors ensues.

Just guessing, but source files may be missing from the old project files. 
Since they have not been added, they are not compiled. Hence, the missing 
references.
