1.9 mostly added (compared to latest 1.4 stable):
- The big one: New render manager (replacing the old renderloop system) allow
for more efficient support for effects that require render to texture (HDR,
post-processing, effects, ...) and others.
- Introduction of heavy and light portals (mostly invisible for the
user). Where
heavy portals are first rendered on a texture and light portals work as they
do in 1.4.
- The threaded loader branch has been merged into svn.
- In relation to that a lot of stuff in CS has been made thread-safe.
- Several features that were deprecated in 1.4 are now removed: like
thing mesh,
old terrain, software renderer, ...
- Dynamic software lighting (the old way) has now been removed in 1.9.
- Work is now being done on instancing (useful for grass, boulders, ...). When
that is finished that will be another big difference between 1.4 and 1.9.
And probably much more that I forgot.
