if you plan to do a GSOC, then you can have a look at the GSOC idea

This list has not been updated since the last GSOC, but this can give
you an idea of the last topics that were worked on. Some of these topics
have still not been addressed, and many others are still welcoming
improvements.

If you want to familiarize yourself with CS as well as being helpful for
the project, then one way to do it would be to try to improve the demos
and tutorials or the documentation. The csbias and csisland demos for
example have a lot of room for improvements, and there
are a bunch of ideas listed for them at
http://www.crystalspace3d.org/trac/CS/wiki/Demo%20and%20Test%20apps.

If you find some topic that you are interested in, then you can ask on
this mailing list for more information on the actual work needed.
