Ah, thank you for pointing me to README.git file. I looked only at README and
that pointed me to INSTALL, which didn't exist.
I honestly didn't think to look for a tarball to download - I figured git would
be the only way to get the source code.

You could normally just install the tool the Ubuntu package. Or build
from a tarball. This is a very stable package; so there's really not
much to be gained by installing from git.

Those are generated files, so they're not in git. As explained in
README.git.
