*NEWSBYTES*

AGM TIME: Canterbury Software Inc's AGM will be held tomorrow,
Friday August 15, at Canterbury Innovation Incubator (Cii) 200
Armagh St, starting at 4pm. Membership information packs are
available at the Cii. If you haven't already paid up your $50
membership fee for 2003/04, cheques will be accepted at the AGM.

CHAMPIONS IN THE RUNNING: Some top CSI member companies are in the
running for recognition as Canterbury business champions. Finalists
for the Champion Canterbury Awards, to be announced on October 2,
include e2-media, Pulse Data International, Keyghost, Cabbage Tree
Creative, SPIS, Tait Electronics, PayGlobal, InFact, and Trimble
Navigation.

TEST INSIGHTS: The testing of Dynamic Controls' new SHARK
powerchair controller was the subject of a case study presented by
CSI member Peter Brown, of Nightside Test Design, at the AsiaSTAR
Conference on Software Testing Analysis and Review in Sydney last
month. Brown says his paper, covering test automation, project
management, PC and embedded system software would be of interest to
software testing professionals and software project managers so he
will make a presentation on Monday August 18 at the Canterbury
Innovation Incubator (Cii) 200 Armagh St. Be there at 7pm for a
7.30pm start, with drinks and nibbles provided. RSVP at
http://www.nightside.co.nz/contact.asp. Use "SHARK Presentation" as
the subject and give the number attending in the message field (for
catering purposes).

PORTAL PROPOSITION: New Zealand has a thriving, robust ICT industry
that's world class, with a number of companies at the leading edge
of new technology, says CSI facilitator James Saruchera. NZ Trade
and Enterprise has asked CSI to help develop listings for a web
portal to get the message about companies and capabilities
available in NZ. CSI member companies interested in being profiled
on the portal, at no charge, should complete the simple form at

BEWARE BLASTER: A new Blaster worm is spreading rapidly around the
world and has been ranked in the top five malicious codes of all
time. Infected computers are programmed to launch a
denial-of-service attack on August 16 on Microsoft's Windows Update
website, where users would normally go for the patch. Known by a
variety of names, including W32.Blaster, MSBlast and W32/Lovsan,
the Blaster worm targets NT 4.0, Windows 2000, Windows XP and
Server 2003. It requires no human intervention, such as downloading
an e-mail or clicking on an attachment to launch a virus. Once
lodged in a computer, it can scan the network looking for other
machines with the same vulnerability. Infected computers will
become sluggish and, in some cases, may automatically crash and
reboot themselves several times. The worm also riddles infected
computers' registries with several computer strings including the
taunt, directed at Microsoft's chairman: "Billy gates why do you
make this possible? Stop making money and fix your software!!"
Patches available at

MOBILE RACE: Research firm In-Stat/MDR predicts the number of
mobile phone subscribers worldwide will reach 2 billion by 2007,
and CDMA will see dramatic growth. But it says the next five years
will see a dramatic slowing of worldwide mobile phone subscriber
growth. However, despite the fact that there has been a lot of fuss
about the "catastrophic slowdown" in subscriber growth, there will
be more than 931 million new subscribers over the next five years.
By 2007, predicts In-Stat/MDR, the total worldwide wireless
population will exceed 2 billion subscribers.

*EXPORT FOCUS*

MAKING AN EFFECTIVE PRESENTATION

A well planned and delivered presentation is essential to getting
your message across to an international audience whether
introducing your company to a prospective agent or client, or
launching a new product or service to a room full of buyers.
Similarly, a confusing, unprofessional or unrehearsed presentation
will reflect badly on you, your product and your company. The tips
in this checklist will help you make the most of your presentation
opportunity and ultimately put you closer to achieving your export
goals.

+From a series of checklists prepared by Trade NZ to help companies
work through the export planning process.

NEXT WEEK: First in a series of legal checklists.

*WEBSITE OF THE WEEK*

E-GOVERNMENT NZ
The website of the E-government Unit, the part of the State
Services Commission that is working with government agencies to
push progress on e-government, is the place to go to check out
standards, strategies, reports and much more. The Government has
set aside $16 million over four years to fund the E-government Unit
and there will be other costs as e-government services such as the
portal are developed, and as agencies take more functions online.
