The Ministry of Research Science and Technology advisory group is working quickly to prepare a briefing for Science and technology ministers.
They have been tasked with finding what the high-speed network needs are of
the Digital media/creative sector.
New Zealand is significantly behind most of the other OECD countries in terms of internet access, bandwidth
availability and pricing. The government wants to provide significant
funding to reduce this deficit and is asking for input from a wide range
of potential user groups.
This email is to solicit input that can be used to determine benefits of a
high speed (gigabit) research network (not clogged with everyday
clutter) for the Digital Media/Creative community itself.
Examples of what you can comment on include:
+ limitations of the current networking infrastructure
+ new research opportunities
+ leverage to improve/accelerate existing research
+ how to improve collaboration
Examples of new opportunities with the creative sector will be
especially welcome, particularly in light of the government's current
focus on the creative sector as an area of development (along with the
ICT and bio sectors) and its desire to foster collaborations between the
research community and creative industries.
Possible benefits and new opportunities opened by such a network might
include:
Improved content sharing with remote partners and collaborators
Increasing export sales and establishing off-shore markets
Real time remote performance opportunities
Access to significant centralized computing resources
Improved collaboration
Access to large content repositories (film, audio, still image)
I would also like examples of how you currently use the existing
networks and how high bandwidth/cheap networks could impact on your
bottom line.
Even a few sentences would be most helpful, so if I could have your feedback a.s.a.p.
Please pass this on to anyone in the Creative Industries space who may wish to
contribute.
