3G POTENTIAL: Vodafone's proposed roll-out of a third-generation
mobile network is tipped to strengthen New Zealand's hand as a
centre for mobile technology development and open doors for
software developers to create applications for worldwide export.
New Zealand Wireless Data Forum president Scott Wattie says the
roll-out gives New Zealand the opportunity to create a beach-head
for all cellular 3G technology and Vodafone New Zealand managing
director Tim Miles says though Vodafone hasn't yet talked with
local developers about potential new applications he expects
approaches from developers in coming weeks. - Stuff

SPAMMER UNDER FIRE: InternetNZ is lodging complaints against
Christchurch spammer Shane Atkinson with three different
regulatory bodies. Atkinson has been identified in the media as
being responsible for sending up to 100 million spam emails a day
to promote his penis enlargement pills. InternetNZ vice-president
David Farrar said complaints are being lodged with the Commerce
Commission for breach of Section 10 of the Fair Trading Act 1986,
relating to misleading conduct in relation to goods; the Ministry
of Health for breach of the Medicines Act 1981; and the Privacy
Commissioner for breach of the Privacy Act 1993. "Mr Atkinson is an
unrepentant spammer who believes that those who don't want to
receive spam should not connect to the Internet. InternetNZ
disagrees that connecting to the Internet is a licence for Mr
Atkinson to promote his penis enlargement pills to every man, woman
and child's email address he can find" said Mr Farrar. InternetNZ
has been considering investigating the possibility of advocating
for NZ legislation to combat spam.

GOVT IT GROWTH: The Australian public sector IT services market is
expected to grow at more than three times the industry average over
the next three years, research firm Gartner says. It predicts 13.1
per cent compound annual growth, compared to an industry average of
2 to 3 per cent for other industries. - Australian IT

PDI IN RUNNING: Christchurch-based Pulse Data International has
been named as a finalist for the American Chamber of Commerce
(AmCham) business awards. The annual Success and Innovation awards,
held in conjunction with Air New Zealand, celebrate business
success in the export, import, investment and tourism sectors
between New Zealand and the US. Other Services & Technology
category finalists are Orion Systems International and Software of
Excellence. Winners will be announced on August 27.

TOUGH TIMES: Conditions for starting a business in the UK have
deteriorated over the last 12 months, according to a poll of
business advisers. However, the accountancy survey found the IT and
financial sectors forecast the greatest growth in profits (5.5 per
cent and 4.9 per cent respectively). Less than quarter of chartered
accountants responding to the survey said economic conditions were
more conducive to starting-up than they were this time last year,
with more than half saying conditions have worsened. However,
respondents were more confident about the general state of the
economy. More than 40 per cent believe it will accelerate in the
next 12 months, against 34 per cent who thought it would slow down.

BOOT CAMPS: Registrations are open for the Anza Technology network
s boot camp seminars to help prepare companies for the Anza Tech
Showcase Conference in Silicon Valley in November. Minter Ellison
is sponsoring and hosting the seminars, with a late-September
Christchurch event planned. For further information contact David
