HR SYSTEM EVOLVES FROM PSYCHOLOGY STUDIES
By CAROL WEBB

A German Research Foundation fellowship to do post-doctoral
psychology studies anywhere in the world brought Dr Katrin Hille to
Christchurch five years ago. She is now preparing to deliver an
internet-based tool to help human resources consultants and
employers manage the increasingly complex processes of hiring and
managing staff.

copyright and patent laws.

*NEWSBYTES*

OFFICE 2003: Microsoft says Office 2003 should be on the shelves by
October 21, and that some equipment makers will begin shipping
machines with the software by the end of September. Included in the
System product are new versions of applications such as Word,
Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook, as well as three new programs:
InfoPath with support for XML-based documents; Live Communications
Server; and OneNote for digital note-taking on Tablet PCs. A
redesign of Outlook features junk mail filters and a tool called
the Research Task Pane said to enable faster access to data.

AUSSIES BUY DOMAINZ: Domainz has been sold for NZ$2 million to
Melbourne IT, an Australian domain name registrar that is listed on
the Australian Stock Exchange. InternetNZ said 12 bids were
received from a wide range of organisations. Domainz was formed in
1997 to manage the .nz registry on behalf of InternetNZ. In June
2000 InternetNZ formed .nz Registry Services to deliver the
wholesale provision of domain names, and created the Office of the
Domain Name Commissioner to oversee the market. There are now more
than 30 domain name registrars supplying .nz names.

SPAMMERS TURN TABLES: Christchurch spammer Shane Atkinson announced
he was quitting his penis pill promotion business just days after
featuring in the media. Atkinson became the target of a blitz by
anti-spam vigilantes after his personal contact details were posted
on the internet.

COLLABORATION DEAL: The Human Interface Technology Laboratory (HIT
Lab NZ) based at the University of Canterbury will be collaborating
closely with the new Australasian Centre for Interaction Design
(ACID), based at Queensland University of Technology (QUT) in
Brisbane. The Australian Federal Government has committed A$12.4
million over seven years to ACID, while QUT and its industry and
academic partners will invest a further A$7.4 million to develop
creative technologies for improving access to the digital world and
creative industries. The HIT Lab will be contributing staff time
and its technologies to collaborative research projects and will
host visiting researchers from the five Australian universities
partnering in ACID.

MISSING FULL-STOP: The chain of events that brought New Zealand's
sharemarket to a halt last week is being blamed on a missing
full-stop in code for a trivial change to a software program.
Registry company Computershare says the problem began with an
alteration to code to make a minor change - the difference between
upper case and lower case lettering - in a message format. A
missing full-stop in the updated code led to an unexpected
side-effect where some share trades were not automatically updating
the register's records of who owned what.

IHUG SET FOR SALE: Auckland-based ISP Ihug is likely to be sold to
Perth-based sharemarket listed iiNet. Ihug managing director Martin
Wylie said negotiations should be completed by the end of this
month and Australian approval processes could take until the end of
September. According to the Western Australian paper, the deal is
worth around $A25 million in shares and cash. Ihug sees access to
iiNets listing as the key to future capital raising.

COMPUTER CONTRACTS
This checklist is primarily intended for buyers of computer
systems. It is assumed that the seller already has internal
procedures and documentation obviating the need for this checklist.
Nonetheless, a seller may wish to use this checklist to determine
the adequacy of its own internal procedures and documentation.
