SARBANES-OXELY AND THE SOFTWARE MARKET
Hint: biggest thing since Y2K)

Corporate USA is undergoing a big shakeup thanks to a piece of
legislation known as Sarbanes-Oxely. Like the Y2K phenomenon, it
means big opportunities for companies with the right software and
the right approach, writes CSI member and US market specialist MARK
RIPMA of Menlo Park Research, Inc in this hyperLINK exclusive
article. Viewable by CSI members only

*NEWSBYTES*

WELLINGTON WI-FI: Wellington owners of laptop computers and PDAs
now have over 100 Wi-Fi "hotspots" where they can log on to the
internet via wireless broadband connections courtesy of fibre
optic network operator CityLink. Managing director Neil de Wit says
that by the end of next month, its CafeNet Wi-Fi service will be
available the length of Lambton Quay and in the city's railway
station as well as dozens of other high-traffic locations. The
privately-owned community-based business, originally set up by
Wellington City Council in 1995, has begun trialling Wi-Fi capable
mobile phones on the network. - InfoTech

GOVERNMENT GOING E: Government departments are working on more
than 100 unfinished e-government initiatives, according to a survey
conducted by the State Services Commission. The SSC's e-government
unit surveyed 36 public sector agencies to help pool information
about plans to put services online. The agencies provided details
of 150 separate initiatives, of which about a quarter have been
delivered. Among plans unveiled during the past two months is a
decision to trial Internet voting in a constituency in "middle New
Zealand" in the 2008 general election and to routinely publish
court judgments on the Net for free public access. - Stuff

HELPING HAND: Marketing software developer Touchpoint has received
a $168,000 co-investment from Technology New Zealand to
internationalise its software suite as part of its export drive.
The company will focus on developing product scalability to enable
it to compete in big markets like the UK. The grant was made
through Technology New Zealand's Technology for Business Growth
(TBG) scheme. Touchpoints web-based software is a suite of tools
that allows companies to communicate directly with their customers
via any combination of email, the web, call centre, fax and SMS
text messaging. It includes database, campaign management and
automation tools, publishing, communications and sales promotion
modules, complete with e-commerce functionality. - Scoop

STORAGE SOARS: IT market forecaster IDC is predicting continuing
significant increases in new storage capacity in New Zealand. It
says new capacity expected to ship will increase annually by almost
49.3%. - Scoop www.scoop.co.nz/mason/stories/SC0309/S00092.htm

IBM CUTS IN AUST: More than 150 IBM Global Services Australian
staff are facing redundancy after the company embarked on a
"redeployment" programme last week, and union officials are
predicting more job losses to come. Sources close to the company
told Australian IT that 90 staff in Melbourne and 30 each in
Brisbane and Adelaide were told they had four weeks to find another
job within IBM, or face redundancy. The redundancies are at least
partly related to changes in Telstra's relationship with IBM Global
Services. - Australian IT

SUN BREAKTHROUGH: Sun Microsystems says it has discovered a way to
connect a computer's chips face-to-face rather than linking them
through the web of fine wiring laid down on a circuit board, a
technology breakthrough that could speed up data movement by as
much as 100 times while reducing power usage, according to a Sun
spokesman. It could eventually bring an end to the use of printed
circuit boards. - Mercury News
