*NEWSBYTES*

WIFI TRIAL: Christchurch Airports Koru club lounge is part of a
Telecom wireless WiFi hotspot trial. About 100 executives are
participating in the free three-month trial, which lets notebook
computer users remotely log on to the internet without having to
pay charges for sending and receiving data via Telecom's mobile
phone network. The trial is also being run at Wellington and
Auckland airports. - InfoTech

RETAIL DEAL: Canterbury Software Inc member company JYMCO Group has
scored a deal with Australasia-wide retailer Harvey Norman to stock
its Webinabox.tv, a web site development tool aimed at the SME
market. Webinabox.tv provides users with a web development
environment that is akin to a standard word processor and comes
with free web hosting for the first 12 months. A personal
edition of Webinabox.tv will be released soon for the home
consumer market.

NZ RANKS SIXTH: Research released by IDG Canada places NZ sixth out
of 10 countries surveyed for IT use and adoption. Sweden led the
way, followed by Denmark, the Netherlands, Norway, Finland, New
Zealand, Switzerland, the United States, Austria and Canada.

EXPANSION MODE: Tyco Safety Products Christchurch, host of tomorrow
s Friday Tech BBQ, is to double the size of its R&D operations.
The decision means the Christchurch operation will be involved with
R&D on a worldwide basis for fire products including alarm
monitoring systems, detection systems and evacuation systems. The
company will be recruiting additional electronic and software
engineers, and electronic technicians.

SPAMMER GOES FREE: Authorities won't take action against
Christchurch spammer Shane Atkinson, who reportedly admitted
sending out up to 100 million emails a day worldwide promoting
penis enlargement pills. The Commerce Commission has indicated it
does not believe the matter is sufficiently serious to investigate.
Associate IT Minister David Cunliffe says it is good that public
exposure has forced Mr Atkinson to stop spamming, but he says the
Commerce Commission decision strengthens the case for a specific
law to ban spam the merits of which were already being weighed up
by the Government. - InfoTech

SCITECHDAILY REVIEW
http://www.scitechdaily.com
Home-grown and internationally recognised, SciTechDaily Review
makes a great home page for anyone keen to keep up with whats
happening in the world of science. It was founded in late 1998 as a
labour of love by science maven and CSI stalwart Vicki Hyde. Two
years later SciTechDaily was lucky enough to find a marriage of
like minds in the form of the Caltech-based Closer to Truth
initiative. An alliance was formed to boldly go forth and spread
the word of the role of science and technology in society.
