GLOBAL VIEW: A workshop has been scheduled for December 3 to give
Canterbury Software Inc members the chance to up-skill in global
software marketing and product development and the methodology and
implementation of marketing planning. Presenter is Patrick Rottiers
of PROConsulting Ltd, who has extensive international experience
and promises a session densely packed with both kiwi and
international case studies. He will also be available for one-to
one follow-up coaching (fully funded by New Zealand Trade and
Enterprise). The workshop, from 2-5pm at the Canterbury Innovation
Incubator, is being held under the Canterbury Development
Corporations Enterprise Training programme. Details at
http://www.canterburysoftware.org.nz/events

PAYGLOBAL TOPS: Christchurch high-flyer PayGlobal has taken
software honours in the Westpac HiTech Awards. Winner of the
supreme award was Auckland GPS specialist Rakon, which was also
named best electronics company. Other Christchurch successes
included the Exporter of the Year award and a software category
commendation for iTouch Business Mobility, and Young Achiever
prizes to Stephen Mann of Tait Electronics and Henry Bettle of EDAC
Electronics. Deal of the year commendations went to Tait and EDAC.

PEERING EXCHANGE: Wellington-based broadband provider CityLink
(http://citylink.co.nz) has begun work on a Christchurch peering
exchange to allow customers to connect their networks openly with
other customers. While ISPs are the logical users of such a system,
managing director Neil de Wit says most of the clients are
companies rather than internet providers. CityLink will have six
peering exchanges around the country. Rather than routing a call or
connection via a main central exchange, regional peering exchanges
allow customers to exchange data and connect locally. -

PC SALES DIP: Third-quarter PC sales were down 10% on the previous
three months but up 29.2% on the same period in 2002, according to
latest figures from IDG. Total sales were more than 111,000 with
Hewlett-Packard leading the overall PC market, accounting for a
third of total sales. HP also leads the mobile PC market ahead of
Toshiba, its traditional rival.

CHIP BREAKTHROUGH: Intel says it has identified new materials to
replace those that have been used to manufacture chips for more
than 30 years. Researchers have developed record-setting,
high-performance transistors using a new material, called high-k,
for the gate dielectric and new metal materials for the transistor
gate. Intel says the new high-k material reduces leakage by more
than 100 times over the silicon dioxide used for the past three
decades.

VC FOR START-UPS: New Zealand Trade and Enterprise is preparing a
new scheme aimed at helping start-up companies with venture capital
and market expertise. Awaiting sign-off from government ministers
and final approval for the new brand, the scheme will replace the
incumbent scheme, Investment Ready, which ended in July when Trade
New Zealand and Industry New Zealand merged to become New Zealand
Trade and Enterprise. The programme is aimed at taking on firms
with sound business practices as opposed to those at the "idea"
stage. If a proposal is declined the company will be encouraged to
return when it is better prepared. - Independent
