*NEWSBYTES*

WORKSHOP SEQUEL: CSIs International software marketing, pricing
and distribution workshop late last year was rated highly useful by
members. On January 28 a follow-up workshop by presenter Patrick
Rottiers will look in greater depth at how effective project
management can strengthen businesses competing internationally. For
more details of this member-only workshop, delivered in association
with CDC and Enterprise Training, contact Nicky Leadley on 0800 249
232 or e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

INNOVATION SHOWCASE: Selected CSI member companies will strut their
stuff for an international audience on March 11 during the APEC
science ministers meeting being held in Christchurch. Under the
theme "Succeeding Globally with Software" leading, globally
oriented software companies will deliver a series of 5-minute
presentations providing an overview of the range of software
products, services and international collaborations under way. APEC
delegates will have the opportunity to find out more from
participants and other Canterbury Software Incorporated members at
an informal networking session following the presentations. CSIs
APEC coordinator is Vicki Hyde (SPIS Ltd) [EMAIL PROTECTED]

CLUSTER GURU: Since establishing Cluster Navigators in 1997, Ifor
Ffowcs-Williams has been active across Europe, North America,
Africa, the Caribbean and Australasia,
introducing the relevance of clustering as a cornerstone for
business growth. He is a frequent speaker on competitiveness,
clusters, and local innovation systems and has a client list that
includes The World Bank, OECD, and Commonwealth Secretariat.
Ffowcs-Williams will be meeting with Canterbury Software members on
February 17, advising on how business growth can be achieved
through clusters. He will be available to chat to Canterbury
Software members at the Millennium Hotel from 5-7pm. RSVP to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] phone 353 6873.

GRADUATE GROWTH: A big increase is expected in the number of
students graduating with tertiary qualifications in information and
communications technology (ICT) over the next five years. That is
the key finding of a study carried out by Investment New Zealand,
which surveyed 24 tertiary institutions, including New Zealands
eight universities. The findings show that 3818 students graduated
in 2002 with ICT-related qualifications and this number is
projected to climb by 32% to 5045 graduates in 2007.

PEACE DOWNSIZING: One of New Zealand's largest software development
companies, utility billing specialist Peace Software, is to shed up
to 40 development and support staff as it shifts work to outside
contractors. Chief executive Brian Peace said its work was
becoming more linked to partnerships with IBM and Accenture. Peace
has 375 staff worldwide, down from 450 18 months ago. Most of the
latest round of job cuts will come in Auckland. The company is
bidding on six major deals, with particular interest on sites
switching from Customer One, a product developed by Andersen
Consulting, which is no longer supported. - NZ Herald

XP TROJAN: Security companies are warning internet users about a
new Trojan horse program spreading via spam email and masquerading
as a Windows XP software update from Microsoft. The program, known
as "Xombe" or "Dloader-L," arrives as an executable attachment in
spam email messages purporting to come from
[EMAIL PROTECTED] and installs itself on victims
computers when users open the attachment. It then connects to a
website and downloads and installs another program, called Mssvc-A,
a Trojan horse program that conscripts victim computers in
distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks against web pages.
