DOOM & GLOOM: The Mydoom computer virus caused 250,000 computers
worldwide to bombard the Web site of SCO Group Inc in the
largest-ever such electronic attack. SCO Group, which is in a
legal fight for control of the Unix operating system, shut down the
site after the weekend attack. Mydoom, which first appeared a week
ago, spreads an e-mail attachment that makes computers send waves
of requests to specified websites. A second strain, dubbed
Mydoom.B, was programmed to attack the Microsoft site this week. Up
to 1 million computers are believed to be infected with the virus
worldwide, and about a quarter of those are thought capable of
attacking.

MORE BROADBAND: The supply of international bandwidth to New
Zealand is about to explode with two new satellites coming on
stream in the next year. Ericsson's partnership with Thai-based
Shin Satellite will base the earth stations for the new IPStar
satellite in Auckland, providing up to 45GBit/s connectivity
between NZ and South East Asia. French telecomms manufacturer
Alcatel is also launching a new satellite, Worldsat 3, which will
operate over the Pacific. Ericsson and Shin have bid for the
government's last Project Probe broadband region, the extremely
remote satellite-service region. - Computerworld

ANTI-SPAM: InternetNZ is launching an anti-spam website developed
by David Harris, creator of the Pegasus email application, that
will include links to ISPs' anti-spam email addresses for reporting
spam.

AUST JOBS: Despite a decline in the number of jobs advertised
online, the Australian IT and telecommunications sector has
performed better than most, registering a slight drop in January
from December 2003 figures. According to the latest Internet Job
Index by Olivier Recruitment Group, IT&T experienced a drop of 4.57
percent (seasonally adjusted) in the number of jobs advertised last
month. On the whole, internet job ads fell by 8.89 percent in
January. - Computerworld Australia

*EXPORT FOCUS*

SERVICING YOUR PRODUCT OVERSEAS
Service levels are much better today than they use to be, but not
all of exporters' customers will share that same commitment to
service. Exporters should not take service for granted, and need
to do their homework on service levels.
