A host of new uses in the medical industries are being identified
for an ingenious handheld 3D-object scanner created by Christchurch
company Applied Research Associates NZ Ltd (ARANZ).

MARKET RESEARCH INSIGHTS: A new CSI-CDC workshop titled Software
Businesses: Do your own market research, is scheduled for Thursday
February 26 (note change of date), 2-5pm at Canterbury Innovation
Incubator. This workshop will explore how software companies can
investigate and conduct their own research, including the

JOBS SECURE: I-health director Brian Allen says no one at
Auckland-based i-health or sister company the Galen Group will lose
their job as a result of both companies� acquisition by British
health software company iSOFT.  I-health, which will become part of
iSOFT�s Asia-Pacific subsidiary, makes software for use in EHRs
(electronic health records). - Computerworld

MARKETING FOCUS: Former Jade high-flyer Owen Scott has resigned to
start a high-tech marketing consultancy targeting Christchurch
software and electronic firms. He says his company, Concentrate,
will focus on building marketing skills and addressing
organisational capabilities. Scott, who headed Jade�s move into the
North American market, is already working with Canterbury Software
Inc member SLI systems growing market share for its intelligent
search technology in the US.

PATENT STIR: An application by Microsoft for a New Zealand patent
governing the use of XML and word processor applications will be
objected to just as soon as anyone can see what exactly the patent
covers. New Zealand Open Source Society president, Peter Harrison,
says he discovered the patent while researching Microsoft�s moves
towards licensing the FAT file system. The patent is currently
under examination by the Intellectual Property Office (IPONZ) and
few details are available. - Computerworld

WELLINGTON VISION: TUANZ (Telecommunications Users Association of
NZ) is putting its clout into promoting Wellington as a multi-media
powerhouse by merging with Wellington-based (e)-Vision. (e)-Vision
is a six year old organisation that brokers ideas and relationships
in high technology businesses and the wider community. It has an
80-seat high technology events centre in Wellington's Wakefield St
with sophisticated computer and video conferencing facilities. The
merged operation will be governed by the existing TUANZ Board. The
former TUANZ Interactive Awards have ben renamed the TUANZ
(e)-Vision Awards.

APPLE FOR THE TEACHERS: Free operating system upgrades and
additional Apple Macintosh software are being made available to all
state and state-integrated schools using Macintosh systems. The
Ministry of Education says there are more than 20,000 Apple
computers in use in schools and the programme will also offer
extended licences to all teaching and administrative staff to cover
home-use for work purposes. Private schools will be eligible to buy
the software from the vendor at the same price negotiated by the
Ministry of Education.

CLUSTER GURU: Since establishing Cluster Navigators in 1997, Ifor
Ffowcs-Williams has been active across Europe, North America,
Africa, the Caribbean and Australasia, introducing the relevance of
clustering as a cornerstone for business growth.  He is a frequent
speaker on competitiveness, clusters, and local innovation systems
and has a  client list that includes The World Bank, OECD, and
Commonwealth Secretariat. Ffowcs-Williams will be meeting with
Canterbury Software members on February 17, advising on how
business growth can be achieved through clusters.  He will be
