MARKET RESEARCH INSIGHTS: A new CSI-CDC workshop titled Software
Businesses: Do your own market research, is scheduled for Thursday
February 26 (note change of date), 2-5pm at Canterbury Innovation
Incubator. This workshop will explore how software companies can
investigate and conduct their own research, including the
investigation of offshore customers. To register your interest,
contact CDC's Nicky Leadley on 0800 249 232
or e-mail [EMAIL PROTECTED]

ADVANCED APPS PLAN: At least 390 jobs and export revenues worth
$378 million would be created within five years if the Government
endorses a plan to set up a Centre for Advanced Government
Applications in the capital, says the Information Technology
Association. The centre would provide a forum in which government
departments and industry would work together to identify
technological solutions to the challenges faced by government
agencies. The Information Technology Association (Itanz) envisages
government departments would be encouraged to "test-bed" innovative
ICT systems. Government agencies would then help IT firms sell
these solutions to overseas governments by allowing their agencies
to be used as reference sites possibly in return for a share of
royalties, free upgrades or support. - Stuff

JASPER COPES: Jades Jasper student enrolment system handled the
demands of Waikato Universitys summer school with fewer staff than
in the past and with faster turnaround. Jasper has had several
functionality and process improvements since it went live a year
ago. The system, which replaced the Sears student management system
the university had used for 12 years, is performing to expectations
as the university prepares for its first semester next month, says
IT services director Derek Postlewaight. He says last years staff
cutbacks at Jade havent affected its ability to support Jasper. -

BROADBAND PACKAGES: Telecom has moved a step closer to backing up
its claim that this will be the "year of broadband" with three new
internet packages but the deals may hurt its resale partners. An
entry-level deal offering download speeds of up to 256kbps and with
a 1GB download cap comes in at $40. A mid-grade deal for $50 offers
a 3GB cap and a $70 deal offers a 10GB cap with no excess data
charges. For the first two deals, Telecom has peeled back its
excess data charges from 20c a megabyte to 5c a megabyte. The
previous cheapest Jetstream deal was $65 a month for 128kbps with a
5GB cap. The catch is that customers have to give all their
voice-calling business to Telecom or the deals cost $10 more a
month. - NZ Herald

FIGHTING SPAM: The war against spam stepped up this week with the
launch of a website of resources for combating the problem. The
site (http://stopspam.net.nz) is largely the work of InternetNZ
councillor David Harris, the Dunedin developer of Pegasus Mail. -

OPEN SOURCED: The software used to power New Zealands domain
registration system has been released to open source developers.
Version 1.8 of the Domain Name Registry System has been uploaded to
the projects development website
(http://sourceforge.net/projects/dnrs). DNRS is built upon two
other open-source products, the Perl scripting language and the
PostgreSQL database. - Computerworld

INNOVATION SHOWCASE: Eight CSI member companies will tell their
stories to an international audience on March 11 during the APEC
science ministers meeting being held in Christchurch. The 2-5pm
event at Canterbury Manufacturers Association will have the theme
"Succeeding Globally with Software". APEC delegates will have the
opportunity to find out more from participants and other Canterbury
Software Incorporated members at an informal networking session
following the presentations. Confirmed presenters are KeyGhost,
Jade Software Corporation, GI Solutions, Real Contacts/Eurekster,
FireTrust (MailWasher), Bootstrap IT, SPIS (TurboNote+) and Concord
Systems. CSIs APEC coordinator is Vicki Hyde (SPIS Ltd)
