Hi Everyone, I'd like to hear some opinions from people that have developed applications for Windows Mobile/Pocket PC/CE, or anybody that has done cross-platform development for handhelds/smartphones.
We have been providing a simple data transfer and system configuration app for our equipment. The app runs on Palm OS. We are looking at either rewriting the app for Windows handhelds, or using a cross-platform solution to include both Palm and Windows. If any of you have used either sorts of tools, I would appreciate some brief comments about the good and bad parts of your experience, in particular, any possible pitfalls. We are familiar with Microsoft .NET development, so we are not anticipating the step to Windows Mobile to be too problematic. The cross-platform tools that we have looked at so far are: J2ME Appforge Crossfire Waba and its variants Has anybody tried these? Is the cross-platform thing actually viable? According to a Gartner report, Windows Mobile is the better platform for complex applications, while J2ME will operate on a wider range of devices. Our application is fairly simple, but we do have a requirement to transfer data from the handheld to a PC (probably via USB rather than LAN or WAN). >From what I've seen, J2ME may not have much support for this sort of thing. My specific concerns are: - What compatibility problems are there with the .NET Compact Framework on different handhelds? - Are there any major "gotcha's" or drawbacks with a particular option? - How useful is the documentation and tutorials? I look forward to your comments.
