I have been in discussion with several parties including large companies,
government agencies and some colleagues about setting up a pilot training
programme for mainly technical undergraduates during this summer vacation.
There is a possibility that government subsidies in the order of $10/ hour
for up to 400 hours may be available. In order to take advantage of this
opportunity and to try and increase the supply of more experienced graduates
for the Canterbury region, I am proposing a pilot scheme of about 10 to 15
students. My involvement would be to identify the opportunities some of you
may have, promote these to local universities and polytechnic and to
preselect interested candidates for those of you having suitable vacancies.
Depending on who is a available and their existing experience, I may arrange
a short introductory programme of hardware or software familiarisation with
private training providers prior to the students starting work. During their
work phase, I would mentor the students as well as have regular sessions to
introduce them more widely to local business networks.
If such a pilot was sucessful, I plan to extend this further next year.
I plan that my remuneration from this should be obtained as a management fee
from govt sources together with an introduction fee from organisations
should the organisation wish to extend its relationship with the student
after the initial training period.
If you think you might have an opportunity for a student this summer
vacation, whose costs might be subsidized, please could you respond to me by
Friday the 12th October with the following information:
1. Provide a thumbnail sketch of the opportunity you have available and for
how long
2. The background discipline and skills sought from a candidate you would
like
3. Whether you are prepared to pay the student an additional sum to that
provided by the subsidy above and how much?
4. When you need to have the position finalised by
Please would you respond to mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]

I look forward to hearing from you.
