TRADE NEW ZEALAND HOSTS HIGH TECH SINGAPORE DELEGATION

Phase Z.Ro Beachhead to be explained in presentation series around the
country

A senior delegation from Singapore will visit New Zealand next month (May
6-9), keen to meet with companies interested in expanding into South East
Asia and beyond.

A key aspect of the visit by the four-member delegation, which is headed by
the Asia-Pacific director of the EDB's international operations Wong Peng
Wai, will be promoting the New Zealand beachhead initiative within the new
Singaporean Phase Z.Ro technology park.

The park includes a New Zealand Technology Centre, which offers an
opportunity for companies in the technology sectors to develop a
cost-effective and strategic springboard into the South East Asia region.

The first of several proposed beachheads into overseas markets, the New
Zealand centre was set up by the New Zealand Government in partnership with
the Singaporean Government, and is being facilitated by Trade New Zealand.

The Singaporean delegation is being accompanied by New Zealand's Trade
Commissioner to Singapore, Robert Skinner, and will hold a series of
presentations about Phase Z.ro on their visit from May 6 to 9.

Mr Skinner says Trade New Zealand intends to have a significant New Zealand
presence at Phase Z.Ro, and says companies will benefit from collaborating
and co-locating there.

"It's intended the centre will be not only a shop window for New Zealand
technology in the market, but an opportunity for companies to network,
collaborate with complementary partners, and attract venture capital and
investment.

"From a presence at Phase Z.ro companies can develop and eventually migrate
to establish their own offices and presence in the market.

"Singapore is also a strategic launch pad for entry to the South East Asia
region, and will give companies opportunities to leverage off the major
multinational companies situated there and make connections to the
significant technology sectors in India and the US."

The Phase Z.Ro development is precursor to a much bigger development called
"One North" that will be built over the next 15 to 20 years.

The "One North" development comprises a 200 hectare park including a mix of
new business, research facilities, technology, and residential developments.

Many of the companies already represented at Phase Z.ro are information
technology and media companies from around the world.

The New Zealand Technology Centre at Phase Z.ro will be staffed by a Trade
New Zealand business development manager, who will represent companies'
interests and prospect for new business.

An appointment to the position is expected to be made in June.

Through the centre companies will also be able to hire office space, use
virtual-office facilities and hot-desk during market visits.

Trade New Zealand is working with the Singapore EDB on developing tailored
packages for companies to use the Phase Z.ro facilities.

Anne Stevenson from Trade New Zealand's technology and services team says
the packages will match companies at different stages of market development,
from virtual facilities to permanent office space.

"The visiting delegation offers New Zealand companies an opportunity to find
out more about these packages and about establishing a low-cost base in
Singapore," she says.

The Singaporean delegation's presentations are to be held in Auckland,
Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Accompanying Mr Peng Wai on the New
Zealand visit are Asst Manager Danny Phuan, Science Hub Development, JTC
Corporation, Asst Director Keh Li Ling, Singapore Broadcasting Authority,
and Senior Officer Christina Ng, EDB International Operations (Asia
Pacific).
