I have some thoughts about what Manusheel Sir wrote.

" it seems that CSI-NSIT is indeed charging much less than what it should
charge."
I think CSI NSIT is charging a lot for something which should be free. Why
would i even pay Rs 200 for something which i should get for free.

"It seems marketing and distribution costs for Windows costs 10 times higher.
Microsoft is very happy that CSI-NSIT is helping them reduce the distribution
of pirated versions"
I'm not sure Microsoft would be too happy to know that CSI NSIT is selling
their product for Rs 200. Microsoft gives software at low cost to educational
institute so that all the students have access to the genuine software and not
only those who can pay money for the software. Why would i pay money when i can
download it for "free" from internet. So the whole plan of Microsoft letting
students use Genuine software fails. So how can they be happy ? ;)
" I think that the board might want to scale up the fees to Rs. 400 or Rs. 500
considering the amount of energy put up by second year executive board members
in the middle of end sems."
Well only thing i can say is that CSI is not a profit making body and money
cannot measure the amount of energy put up by the second year executive board
members. And if CSI is charging money for the service it's doing for college
then it's very sad.

So my points are1. Is CSI NSIT paying anything to microsoft ?2. If yes then how
much and if not then why can't it give the software for free to students?3. Is
CSI NSIT charging for the service ?

I am not against paying for the software but atleast i should know why am i
paying.

                  Dear all,

The initiative discussed was introduced during Hemant's tenure, and came into
full circle in the next batch. So, I didn't know the details of this initiative
before it evolved on this group.

Over the last 24 hours, I spoke with Bhatia Sir, Aditya, Abhishek and Hemant to
understand the scenario. From what I could gather from the discussions, it
seems that CSI-NSIT is indeed charging much less than what it should charge.

It seems marketing and distribution costs for Windows costs 10 times higher.
Sure, that might be the case. Reminds me of a close friend, Mary Lou Jepsen
from Pixel Qi. She once told me an interesting insight on the sales of laptops.
She said that the marketing and distribution costs of any normal laptop
accounts for 65-70% of the total costs associated with it. Display device
accounted for less than 25% was an
interesting fact I realized from that discussion.

And, Microsoft is very happy that CSI-NSIT are helping them reduce the
distribution of pirated versions - a major investment goes in that direction.
So, in my humble opinion, I think that the board might want to scale up the
fees to Rs. 400 or Rs. 500 considering the amount of energy put up by second
year executive board members in the middle of end sems. End sems are very
important, guys. You should get into the ghissu mode now.

On a separate note, I found the style of discussions very interesting. Reminds
me of the storyline of "Blood Diamond".

Craig Mundie, hats off to you, friend. You are very smart business guy
indeed.Good luck with Windows 7. Your product has already received enough
publicity on CSI yahoo group :-)

Regards,

Manu
