No one seems to have touched the negative margins aspect of your question, so...

I personally like negative margins methods. They are difficult to get your head around, at first, but once you grasp them they're not so hard to work with. I've found that, at least with your standard layouts, negative margin floats have no more bugs or quirks than regular floats that should prevent me from using them. In fact, negative margin float layouts, depending on how you construct them, take care of some of the more common float gotchas -- IE's three pixel gaps, IE's tendency to drop adjacent non-floated divs that contain large content, etc.

I like them so much, in fact, that I'm writing a series of articles on them for Community MX. I'll leave my shameless plug at that, but contact me offlist if you want more info.
