Seen recently on Usenet: Java is to JavaScript as Car is to Carpet. 

I suspect you really mean JavaScript (since doing a drop down menu as
a Java Applet would be somewhat insane).

There is nothing wrong with using JavaScript to control the behaviour
of a menu, it lets you add essential usability/accessibility features
(such as a time lag before the menu vanishes allowing you to return
the pointer to it if you dragged it off by accident).
