Bruno- Ah, thank you. That solved the problem. The position:relative was apparently in there to solve an issue with the last menu item's bottom border disappearing. I moved the position:relative to the #nav li a as you suggested and it seems to have solved all problems, old and new. Thanks for the help, I'd have never caught that!
