I tried your suggest  - it seems to make the "item" ones bold but not
the "main menu item"

I then tried

        #nav ul+li:sfhover {
        font-weight:bold;
        }

        #nav li:sfhover ul+li {
        font-weight:bold;
        }

They don't seem to work either...  :P

If I understand the question correctly then I think you will need to
specify a style rule for;

#nav ul li:hover { font-weight:bold;}
 
though I am not certain as I've not tested that.
